A systematic approach to self-exploration related to the career and life planning process, including identification of values, interests, skills, personality and self-management style. Develop decision making and goal setting skills and identify barriers to success. Explores and evaluates careers and job search techniques.

COUN 7  Planning for Transfer Success

Analysis and exploration of the university transfer process with particular emphasis on the systems of higher education in California (CSU, UC, and independent colleges and universities) as well as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and schools with designations such Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI), and Asian American and Native American, and Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI). Students will be able to analyze the transfer pathway through the application of theory and concepts relevant to the transfer student experience. Financial aid resources, scholarships, and transfer preparation and transition programs will be explored to assist students in making informed decisions related to transfer with particular emphasis on specialized student support programs and resources for historically underrepresented students such as, but not limited to, undocumented students, students with disabilities, foster youth, students with dependents and LGBTQ+ students. Off-campus tour required.

Through a Counseling discipline lens, this course will provide an overview of the history and structure of higher education in the U.S. It will critically analyze the educational experience of diverse students as well as their social identities and factors that contribute to their college success, using a student development theoretical framework. Accordingly, this course will foster important dialogue reframing and reimagining higher education in the U.S. It will promote personal agency and empowerment to improve the achievement gap of historically underrepresented students. Relevant legislation and contemporary issues in higher education will be examined.

Introductory career planning course designed for students who want assistance in making informed career decisions. A variety of assessments, inventories, and computer generated information will be used to help students explore careers and majors.

Identify behavior patterns that influence student success. Develop skills and strategies to be a successful single parent college student. Topics include communication, assertiveness, conflict resolution, goal setting, decision making, time management, educational planning, career assessment, college resources, self-advocacy, and building a strong support system.
