The Illustration Level 2: Narrative Illustration emphasis certificate expands students’ visual communication and draftsmanship skillset. Students learn how to broaden their unique creative voice in both traditional and digital media while also experimenting with new styles and techniques to help expand their portfolio. Working with industry standard technology focusing on current illustrative trends provides the skillset necessary to begin a career in freelance illustration. Students must complete the Illustration Level 1 certificate first requiring a total of 18 units and courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
Students who successfully complete the program will be able to:
- Communicate narrative concepts through design
- Demonstrate a unique and versatile visual language
- Communicate concepts with clear direction and movement through composition
- Clearly communicate character and emotion visually
- Utilize quick study drawing skills through visual notes and personal studies as a basis for planning larger extended works of art.
- Summarize contemporary art trends
- Create a portfolio representative of their ability to communicate clear compositions with cultural, social, or political ideas
With this certificate, students will have gained the skillset necessary to pursue entry-level employment for a career path within the following job descriptions: Advertising illustration, Technical Illustration, Cover artist/ children’s book illustration, Character Designer, Fashion Illustration, Publishing, Toy design, Poster and print media, Caricature/portrait artist, and Packaging design.
