This course is an introduction to government and politics in the United States and California. Students examine the constitutions, structure, and operation of governing institutions, civil liberties and civil rights, political behaviors, political issues, and public policy using political science theory and methodology. This course satisfies the requirement for a course in the Constitution of the United States and the principles of State and local government as required by Title 5 of the California Administrative Code.

POLS C1000H American Government and Politics - Honors

This course is an introduction to government and politics in the United States and California. Students examine the constitutions, structure, and operation of governing institutions, civil liberties and civil rights, political behaviors, political issues, and public policy using political science theory and methodology. This is an honors course. An honors course designed to provide an enriched experience. Students may not receive credit for both POLS C1000 and POLS C1000H. This course satisfies the requirement for a course in the Constitution of the United States and the principles of State and local government as required by Title 5 of the California Administrative Code.

Major political philosophers and theories from the late nineteenth century to the present. Prepares students majoring in political science for further study in the discipline by providing adequate background preparation in political philosophy.

POLS 35 African American/Black Politics

Methods and strategies employed by African American and Black American populations in their quest to gain equal access and participation in American institutions. This course satisfies the requirement for a course in the Constitution of the United States and the principles of State and local government as required by Title 5 of the California Administrative Code.
POLS 91 Work Experience in Civic and Governmental Organizations
1-3 Units (Degree Applicable)
(May be taken four times for credit)
(May be taken for option of letter grade or Pass/No Pass)
Prerequisite: Instructor approval required. Students must have completed at least one-third of the units in a related program or be concurrently enrolled in a course in such a program.
Work experience involving working with civic and governmental organizations in an approved work site for Political Science and Environmental Studies majors. A minimum of 54 clock hours per semester of supervised work is required for each unit of credit. It is recommended that the hours per week be equally distributed throughout the semester. Work experience placement is not guaranteed, but assistance is provided by faculty. Instructor approval is required. A maximum of 3 units can be earned for this course.
