Principles of nursing as related to a culturally diverse population, adulthood through senescence. Theory and application of the Nursing Process including oxygenation, perfusion, legal/ethical aspects, comfort, fluid and electrolytes, spirituality, and nursing trends.

Introduction to pharmacology, the ethical and legal responsibilities in the administration of medications. Principles of administration of various dosage forms, cultural influences, the nursing process, drug therapy, and mathematical computations are presented. Resources for locating pharmacological information are stressed.

NURS 3  Medical-Surgical Nursing: Locomotion/Sensory/Integument/Oncology/Immunology

Application and concepts for nursing assessment and intervention for clients with problems of locomotion, sensation, and integument. Introductions to oncology nursing and immunology nursing are included.

The concepts of anatomy, physiology, and fetal growth and development are applied to the care of maternity patients, newborn infants, and their families. Nursing care on a wellness-illness continuum using the family-centered approach is introduced.

Concepts of nursing assessment and intervention with application to clients with psychiatric disorders in a mental health setting. Concepts of mental/emotional health and illness are presented within the Nursing Process. Theories of personality development and effective coping strategies for all stages of the life cycle from childhood through senescence are included.

NURS 10  Medical-Surgical Nursing: Integration/Regulation

Presentation and application of concepts of nursing assessment to develop the cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to provide nursing intervention for clients with neurological and endocrine disturbances using the Nursing Process. Emphasis is on clients from early adulthood through senescence. Application of knowledge from sciences to understanding pathophysiology is emphasized. Leadership and management experiences are included.

NURS 11  Preceptorship in Nursing

Students develop cognitive and leadership skills for a pre-licensed preceptee position and prepare for professional responsibilities in employment under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Nurse. Includes explanation and analysis of current trends and issues in nursing.

NURS 20  Nursing Work Experience Program

Prerequisite: Compliance with Work Experience regulations as designated in the College Catalog. Current satisfactory status in the Nursing Program.

On-the-job experience for nursing students in an approved work setting related to classroom, theory, and clinical instruction. A minimum of 75 paid or 60 non-paid clock hours per semester of supervised work is required for each unit of credit. It is recommended that the hours per week be equally distributed throughout the semester.

For the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Psychiatric Technician (PT), or advanced placement student transitioning into the role of the Registered Nurse (RN).
